Weddings & Elopements in Denmark – 5 good reasons to have this moment photographed

Weddings and elopements in Denmark are becoming increasingly popular:
Are you planning your wedding in Denmark? Whether it’s an elopement for two or an intimate wedding ceremony by the sea, Denmark offers the perfect backdrop for genuine, unforgettable moments. And what would such a day be without the right pictures? In this article, I explain why Denmark is so popular as an elopement destination, what elopement actually means – and why professional wedding photos make this moment last forever.
What is an elopement – and why Denmark?
An elopement is a conscious decision to have a small wedding – far away from the stress of a traditional wedding. In the past, it meant secretly ‘running away,’ but today it stands for an intimate, personal ceremony where only what is important to you matters.
My husband and I tied the knot in beautiful Cape Town in 2019 – accompanied by two close friends. It was quiet, honest and deeply connected. No hustle and bustle, no schedule, just us – and the moment. This experience has shaped me personally – and also my work as a photographer.
Denmark offers exactly this space: clear air, wide landscapes, honest moments.
Why Denmark is the perfect place for an elopement
Denmark is considered one of the easiest countries in Europe to get married in – especially for couples from abroad. Many deliberately choose this location because:
- the legal requirements are simple and quick to fulfil
- appointments can be made at short notice
- there is a wide variety of beautiful natural backdrops
- the focus is on intimacy and personality
- there is no need for a lot of fuss – just you and the moment
Whether barefoot on the beach, among the dunes or in front of a lighthouse – Denmark is honest, nordic and peaceful. Just as an elopement should be.
5 good reasons to have this moment photographed
An elopement may be smaller than a large wedding, but it is no less meaningful. Precisely because everything is so personal, it is worth capturing this day in photographs.
1. Your story deserves to be told
Even if you are alone, it is your story. Your decision. And it is worth preserving in pictures. The photos from our own elopement in Cape Town are among our most cherished mementos, and our children also love looking through the albums.
2. The day passes – but pictures remain
An elopement is often intense and emotional – but also over quickly. Photos allow you to return to it as often as you like. What’s more, a photo session connects you, grounds you and gives you 2-3 hours of intense couple time. After a session, many couples tell me that they fondly remember the session and how close they were to each other there. This is mainly because the couples are completely in the moment for a few hours and the time together is perceived more intensely. After all, when else do you give each other 2-3 hours of intense closeness, affection and touch that touches the heart and makes this feeling tangible long afterwards, as soon as you look at a photo?
3. For you – and those who love you
Perhaps you want to share this day with your family later on. Or show your children how you exchanged your wedding vows. The memories we create together reveal their true value in a very special way at any time – whether as a memento for you as a couple or for your loved ones in the future. Photographs capture your love with light and build bridges across generations.
4. Authentic instead of staged
I take photos naturally, calmly, with an eye for genuine moments. No posing. No kitsch. Just you – as you really are. I love to draw inspiration from the Danish backdrop and weave your story into timeless photos.
5. A gift to yourselves
You have made a conscious decision to get married. For yourselves. For a new chapter in your lives. You deserve to give yourselves this day – and have it captured forever.
