Procedure & formalities – getting married in Denmark is that simple
Danish bureaucracy is renowned for its openness and efficiency. This means that the path to marriage is usually quite straightforward:
SUBMIT DOCUMENTS:
Send your passports and any supporting documents (e.g. proof of marital status) to the Danish Family Law Authority.
OBTAIN APPROVAL:
You will receive your marriage licence within a few days.
ARRANGE AN APPOINTMENT:
Choose your preferred registry office – e.g. in Ribe, Copenhagen or on the west coast.
ARRIVAL & WEDDING CEREMONY:
A stay of 1–2 days is often sufficient, although an elopement on the Danish west coast can be combined with a short holiday. After the wedding ceremony, you will receive your international marriage certificate immediately.
This makes getting married in Denmark a stress-free, warm-hearted experience – without any paperwork.
Getting married in Denmark – what you need
If you wish to get married in Denmark, you will need to have a few documents ready:
🤎 Certificate of no impediment to marriage – this confirms that you are both eligible to marry.
🤎 Certificate of marital status – sometimes required if you live abroad. You can usually obtain this from the registration office in your place of residence.
🤎 Proof of residence – if you live together abroad, you will need a corresponding certificate or other documents.
🤎 Birth certificate(s) of your children – if you already have children.
IN ADDITION:
🤎 Both partners must be able to legally enter Denmark and reside there legally.
🤎 The minimum age for marriage is 18 years.
🤎 If one of you has been married before, the previous marriage must be legally dissolved – for example, by a divorce decree, death certificate or annulment decree.
🤎 Marriage between close relatives is not permitted.
🤎 You need a valid passport or other recognised travel document – both when entering the country and during your stay.
Depending on the situation, additional documents or certifications (e.g. apostille) may be required. It is therefore advisable to check the exact requirements with the relevant local authority or the Agency for Family Law in Denmark before submitting your application.
